If you've spent any time looking at driveway security bollards online, you'll know how confusing it gets. Folding posts, telescopic bollards, automatic bollards, all with similar names and wildly different prices. It's hard to know what's actually worth buying.
Two of the most popular telescopic bollards in the UK are the Rhino RT/RD4 and the Rhino RT/R8. Both are made by Rhino Security right here in the UK, both carry top-level security accreditations, and both do the same fundamental job: stop someone driving your car off your driveway. But they're built for slightly different needs, and the price difference between them is enough to make the choice worth thinking about.
We've made a video to help you understand the differences, and we'll also cover them in this article.
What's underground matters more than what's above it
With telescopic bollards, the bit you see above ground is only part of the story. The real strength comes from the sleeve that sits beneath your driveway, set in concrete. That's what stops someone from ramming through it or ripping it out.
The R8 sits in around 900mm of concrete underground. The RD4 sits in around 700mm. Both are substantial. The R8 gives you a bit more depth, which translates to slightly more resistance in an extreme impact scenario. But in practical terms, neither has ever been defeated on an installation. At Wentworth Protection, we have installed thousands of these units - there hasn't been a single case of a car being stolen by forcing through either bollard.

Height and diameter
Above ground, there's a noticeable size difference between the two.
The RD4 stands 500mm above the surface with a 79mm diameter cylinder. It's visible and solid, but relatively discreet. A lot of homeowners prefer this because it doesn't dominate the look of the driveway.
The R8 is taller at 670mm and thicker at 90mm diameter. It's a more imposing presence, which adds to the visual deterrent. When a thief sees a large, heavy-duty bollard on a driveway, they're less likely to bother. That said, even the smaller RD4 sends a clear enough message that the car behind it isn't an easy target.

Daily use and weight
This is where the practical difference really shows up, because you're going to be raising and lowering these bollards every single day.
The RD4 weighs 22kg as a complete unit, but the actual lifting weight is only 6kg. You can pull it up with one hand without any real effort. For elderly homeowners or anyone who doesn't want a physical workout every time they leave the house, that matters a lot.
The R8 weighs 44kg total, with a lifting weight of 14kg. It takes noticeably more effort. If you're reasonably fit, it won't be an issue. But it's worth being realistic about whether you'll find it annoying twice a day, every day, for years. The heavier weight comes from a thick steel-reinforced sleeve running through the centre of the unit, which is what gives it the extra impact resistance. But it does make daily operation less effortless than the RD4.
Finish options
The RD4 comes as standard in stainless steel, which looks clean and modern on most driveways. It can also be ordered in powder-coated colours if you'd prefer something that matches your property.
The R8 only comes in powder-coated finishes. There's no stainless steel option. The upside is you get a wide range of colours to choose from: yellow, red, grey, white, black, and more. Handy if you want the bollard to blend in with your driveway or stand out as a visual deterrent.
Security ratings
The R8 carries a Sold Secure Gold rating, which is the highest level awarded by the independent testing body. Some insurers specifically look for this when offering premium discounts for driveway security.
The RD4 doesn't carry the Sold Secure Gold rating. However, that doesn't mean it won't help with your insurance. Plenty of homeowners with the RD4 installed have successfully negotiated insurance discounts. Having the Sold Secure badge makes the conversation easier, but not having it doesn't shut the door.
So which one should you go for?
For most homeowners, the RD4 is the better everyday choice. It's lighter to use, looks smart in stainless steel, costs less to buy and install (the shallower dig can reduce labour costs too), and offers more than enough protection for a residential driveway. It's the most popular model for a reason.
The R8 makes more sense if you drive a high-value vehicle, particularly a 4x4 like a Range Rover or G-Wagon, and you want the absolute maximum level of physical protection. The extra weight, depth, and Sold Secure Gold rating give added peace of mind if you're in a higher-risk area or just want to know you've gone for the strongest option available.
Both are excellent bollards. Both will protect your car. Neither has ever been breached on a real installation. It genuinely comes down to how much you want to spend, how much you're willing to lift every day, and whether the Sold Secure Gold rating matters to your insurer.
