There isn't really a "best" driveway bollard. Different jobs, different bollards. Below is how the main ones compare.

If you're not sure where to start, telescopic is where most of our residential customers land. Affordable, easy to live with, and they meet the security standards insurers actually care about.

Material choice (it matters more than you'd think)

• Stainless steel is the premium pick. Shrugs off rust, looks the part for fifteen to twenty years even somewhere coastal, and you'll never repaint it. Costs more up front, but it's properly fit-and-forget.

• Powder-coated steel is the value route. Available in colours (black, white, yellow, red), so you can match your gates or your house. Excellent for inland properties. Less ideal if you're somewhere salty or constantly damp.

• Galvanised steel sits in the middle. Tougher finish than paint, but you lose the colour flexibility. Often a sensible call for commercial fits.

For most UK drives, powder-coated black covers it comfortably. Go stainless if you want the bollard to look smart for two decades without thinking about it again.

Installation: where the price actually comes from

The bollard itself is only half the story. Most of what you're paying for is the quality of the professional installation.

A few things shape the final number.

• Surface type. Block paving, tarmac, concrete, gravel, resin: all workable. We core-drill a hole and drop in a ground sleeve. Concrete and resin tend to be quickest. Block paving sometimes needs lifting and relaying around the install point, which adds a bit of time.

• Power requirements. Manual telescopic and fold-down bollards don't need any cabling. Automatic bollards run off a 230V mains feed. We can run the cable as part of the job or work alongside your electrician if you've got one already. For our DriveGuard Auto bollard, we actually use a battery-powered option to completely remove the need for any type of cabling and electrician work, which massively reduces the work involved (and therefore the cost).

• Number of bollards. A single telescopic install is a 1 to 2 hour job. A pair, half a day. A powered system with a long cable run can stretch to a full day.

Insurance and security ratings

If a discount on your car insurance is part of why you're doing this, two UK ratings carry the weight.

• Sold Secure is the main one. Awarded by the Master Locksmiths Association and recognised by virtually every major UK insurer.

• LPS 1175 is the Loss Prevention Standard. Used for higher-security applications, rated 1 to 8 on attack resistance.

• Secure by Design (SBD) is a UK police-backed scheme that ensures the anti-theft rating and suitability of security devices like driveway bollards.

Discounts of 10% to 20% on your premium are common for approved security measures. We'll send the certification to your insurance company on request. Most of our telescopic, heavy-duty and automatic bollards meet one of these standards, often all three.
