How Much Does a Ghost Immobiliser Cost in the UK?

A fitted Autowatch Ghost-II immobiliser costs about £495 to £549 in the UK, and the Ghost-II Pro about £599, from the installers we checked in November 2026. Autowatch’s recommended retail price for the Ghost-II is £499 including VAT, and there’s no subscription afterwards. Prices vary by installer and by car, so always get a written quote for your make, model and year. An immobiliser stops your car being driven away without your code wherever you park. At home, a locked steel post in front of the car stops it leaving the drive at all; compare every type in our driveway bollards range.

What is a Ghost immobiliser and how does it work?

The Ghost is a hidden immobiliser made by Autowatch. An installer connects a small module to your car’s own data network, called the CAN bus. After that, the car won’t start until you enter a secret sequence on buttons already in the car, such as the steering-wheel controls or window switches.

  1. Get in and switch the ignition on.

  2. Enter your sequence on the car’s own buttons. On the Ghost-II, a dashboard light flashes twice to confirm.

  3. Start the car and drive as normal. When you switch off, the Ghost re-arms itself.

Because there’s no extra fob or radio signal to copy, Autowatch presents the Ghost as a defence against relay attacks, where thieves boost your key’s signal to unlock and start the car. Other features worth knowing:

  • Service mode lets a garage or valet drive the car without knowing your code. On the Ghost-II it switches off when you enter your sequence, or after 15 minutes of driving at 32mph or more.

  • An emergency code on a card gets you going if you forget your sequence or a button stops working.

  • Optional phone and fob pairing. The Ghost-II can pair with up to two phones and two fobs, and disarms itself when one of them is in the car.

Ghost-II or Ghost-III? Autowatch says the Ghost-II is no longer in production and the Ghost-III is now its only supported CAN-based Ghost. The Ghost-III supports CAN-FD, a faster data network used in newer cars. If you already have a Ghost-II, Autowatch says you don’t need to upgrade it.

What affects the price of a Ghost immobiliser?

  • Your car. Installers price by make, model and year, and some newer cars aren’t supported yet. Check compatibility before you book.

  • The model. At CEN, the Ghost-II Pro costs £100 more than the Ghost-II.

  • Where it’s fitted. Car Keys Solutions charges from £499 in store and from £549 at your home or work. Others, such as Trackershop and TrackerFit, include mobile fitting in one price.

  • Extras. TrackerFit charges £34.99 for each optional ADR tag. Bundles with a tracker or dash cam cost more.

  • Warranty and aftercare. These vary: CEN lists a 2-year warranty, and Car Keys Solutions a 5-year warranty with lifetime technical support. Compare like with like.

Pros and cons of a Ghost immobiliser

Pros

  • Protects the car wherever you park it: at work, at the station, on the street.

  • Hidden, with no box on show and nothing extra to carry.

  • A one-off cost with no subscription.

  • Works against relay theft and cloned keys, because a thief still needs your sequence to start the car.

Cons

  • You enter your sequence every time you drive. It soon becomes habit, but it’s an extra step.

  • It can’t stop a break-in, or a car being towed or loaded onto a truck.

  • It isn’t visible, so it doesn’t put a thief off before they try.

  • Not every car is supported, and the model you need may depend on how new your car is.

Alternatives to the Ghost immobiliser

Scorpion X-Series immobiliser

The Scorpion X-Series is a CAN bus immobiliser made in Britain by Scorpion Automotive. It works in the same way as the Ghost: a hidden module, and a secret sequence you enter on your car’s existing buttons before it will start. It re-arms itself every time you switch off, has a service mode for garage visits, and needs no extra fob.

We sell the Scorpion X-Series fitted at your home or work by our specialist installation partner, for £649 for one car or £1,199 for two, including VAT. You can pay in three interest-free instalments of £216.33 with Klarna. It comes with a 2-year warranty from Scorpion Automotive, and we check your car is compatible before you book.

Other layers

A signal-blocking pouch for your key and a steering wheel lock are cheap extra layers; see do Faraday pouches work? and do steering wheel locks work? A tracker won’t stop a theft but helps the police find the car afterwards. We compare all three in car tracker vs immobiliser vs bollard.

When a driveway bollard is the better fix

Most cars are stolen from outside their owner’s home, at night. In the Crime Survey for England and Wales (year to March 2025), 67% of car thefts happened at or near the owner’s home, 37% from a driveway or another space on the property, and 75% in the evening or overnight. More figures are in our UK car theft statistics guide.

That’s where a driveway security post works. A locked steel post set in concrete in front of the car means it can’t be driven or towed off the drive, even if a thief has unlocked and started it. It needs no changes to the car, works whatever key system the car has, and thieves can see it from the road.

Every bollard is fitted by expert local installers and comes with our Gold Guarantee: if thieves break through your Wentworth bollard to take your car within 36 months, we refund your installation in full.

The two work best together. A bollard protects the car on your drive, where most thefts happen. An immobiliser protects it everywhere else. If your car spends the night on a drive and you can only do one, start with the bollard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Ghost immobiliser cost in the UK?

Most UK installers we checked in November 2026 charge about £495 to £549 for a fitted Autowatch Ghost-II, and CEN lists the Ghost-II Pro at £599. Autowatch’s recommended retail price for the Ghost-II is £499 including VAT. The final price depends on the installer, your car and whether it’s fitted at your home or at the installer’s premises.

Is there a monthly fee for a Ghost immobiliser?

No. Autowatch says a Ghost installation is a one-off cost with no ongoing subscription or maintenance fees.

What happens if I forget my Ghost code?

Each Ghost-II comes with a 4-digit emergency code on a card. Autowatch’s instructions explain how to enter it using the brake and accelerator pedals, which lets you set a new sequence. Keep the card somewhere safe, away from the car.

Is the Ghost-II still available?

Autowatch says the Ghost-II is no longer in production and the Ghost-III is now its only supported CAN-based Ghost. Many installers still list the Ghost-II, and an existing Ghost-II doesn’t need upgrading. Ask your installer which model suits your car.

Can thieves still steal a car with a Ghost immobiliser?

An immobiliser stops the car being started and driven without your code. It can’t stop someone breaking in, or a car being towed or loaded onto a truck. On a driveway, a locked security post in front of the car physically blocks the way out, which is why the two work well together.

What is the alternative to a Ghost immobiliser?

The Scorpion X-Series works the same way: a hidden CAN bus module and a secret sequence on your car’s own buttons. We sell it fitted for £649 for one car or £1,199 for two. If your car spends the night on a drive, a driveway security post is the other main option, because it stops the car leaving the drive at all.
