Marshalls Rhino Bollards: Every Model Compared

Rhino is Marshalls’ range of security posts and bollards. For a home driveway, three models matter: the RT/RD4, the RT/SS5 and the RT/R8. All three are telescopic posts that lock upright in front of your car and drop flush into the ground when you need the drive. Choose the stainless RT/RD4 for most drives, the taller RT/SS5 for a large SUV, and the RT/R8, certified Sold Secure Gold, for a 4x4, van or high-value car. We supply and fit all three as part of our driveway bollards range, from £799 fitted.

Below is every Rhino model Marshalls lists, what each one is for, and which ones we fit. The figures come from Marshalls’ own product pages, Sold Secure and our spec sheets, with links at the end. One thing to clear up first: Rhino Security Ltd is a separate company that supplies and installs bollards. The Rhino bollards themselves are made by Marshalls.

The first four rows are the telescopic posts we fit on driveways. The rest are Rhino models that Marshalls sells mainly for commercial sites and public spaces.

Sold Secure’s public listing shows the RT/R8, RT/R14 and RT/SQ8 heavy-duty posts at Gold. If your insurer asks for a Sold Secure rating, the RT/R8 is the one to choose.

Heights and widths come from Marshalls’ shop pages and our spec sheets. Marshalls’ commercial pages give slightly different figures for some models (680mm and 89mm for the R8, for example), so treat them as close guides rather than exact measurements.

The Rhino posts we fit

Every post below is supplied and fitted by expert local installers. The price includes VAT, digging, concrete, drainage and making good, and the installers take all the waste away. Compare them side by side on our telescopic security bollards page, or see every option in driveway security posts.

Rhino RT/RD4 in stainless steel: our Premium Stainless at 500mm

The RT/RD4 is Rhino’s domestic telescopic post, which Marshalls lists for driveways. Ours is the brushed stainless version: 500mm above ground, 76mm across and set 700mm into the ground. The whole post weighs 22kg, but you only lift 6kg to raise it before locking it with the key. When it’s down, a lid covers the opening so your drive stays flush. It’s Secured by Design accredited and made in Britain.

It’s our best seller. The Premium Stainless (RT/RD4) is £849 fitted, or 3 × £283 interest-free with Klarna.

Rhino RT/RD4 powder-coated

The same RT/RD4 post in powder-coated steel. We fit it in black, red, silver, white and yellow, so it can match your front door or stand out from the road. It has the same 500mm height, 76mm width and 6kg lift. The Rhino RD4 powder-coated is £799 fitted, or 3 × £266.33 interest-free.

Rhino RT/SS5: our Premium Stainless at 710mm and 900mm

The RT/SS5 is a bigger, heavier stainless post. It’s 101mm across, made from grade 316 stainless steel, with a reinforced 90mm steel sleeve inside and a 10-pin anti-drill push-button lock. We fit it at 710mm and 900mm above ground, for large SUVs or anyone who wants a taller post. It sits about 1,000mm into the ground, and you lift around 18kg to raise it. Marshalls also offers the SS5 with lift-assist, a gas spring that it says cuts the lifting weight by around 70%.

The Premium Stainless 710mm (RT/SS5) is £1,199 fitted, and the 900mm version is £1,399.

Rhino RT/R8: our heavy-duty post

The RT/R8 is the heavy-duty Rhino we fit. It stands 670mm above ground, is 90mm across and goes 950mm into the ground, with a reinforced inner sleeve and a 10-pin anti-tamper lock. It weighs 44kg in all, and you lift 14kg. It’s certified Sold Secure Gold, Secured by Design accredited and made in Britain. Marshalls lists it in galvanised or powder-coated steel, and we fit it powder-coated in eight colours. If you want stainless at a similar size, look at the RT/SS5.

See all our heavy-duty telescopic bollards. The Rhino R8 is £949 fitted, or 3 × £316.33 interest-free.

Rhino models we don’t fit

Marshalls makes these too. They’re designed mainly for commercial sites and public spaces, so we don’t sell them for homes.

  • RT/R14. A larger heavy-duty post, 114mm across, at 670mm or 850mm. It’s certified Sold Secure Gold, and Marshalls describes it as ideal for commercial use. The 670mm post weighs 54kg. For a driveway, the R8 gives you the same Sold Secure grade.

  • RT/SQ8. A square, 90 × 90mm heavy-duty telescopic post, certified Sold Secure Gold, for forecourts, pedestrian zones and town centres.

  • RT/SU5. A telescopic post with a Ferrocast polyurethane coat over a steel core, which Marshalls says helps prevent rust. It’s made for urban spaces.

  • RTL80. A galvanised, lockable post that you lift out completely when you need access. Marshalls suggests it for places that need vehicle access only now and then.

  • Static Rhino bollards (RB, RS and M3 ranges). Fixed steel and stainless bollards for permanent barriers. They don’t move, so they don’t suit a drive you use every day.

  • RhinoGuard. A separate range of protective bollards for public spaces, which Marshalls describes as crash-tested. These are for stopping vehicles in crowded places, not for driveways. None of the posts we fit for homes is crash-rated.

  • Marshalls Driveway Security Post. Marshalls also sells a plain telescopic driveway post in black, yellow or stainless steel. Its product page doesn’t call it Rhino or list a security rating.

How to choose the right Rhino bollard

  • Worried about keyless theft? Any of the posts we fit will do the job. A locked post in front of the car stops it being driven off the drive, even if a thief has unlocked and started it, whatever key system the car has. More in our guide to preventing keyless car theft.

  • On a budget? The powder-coated RT/RD4, at £799 fitted, is the lowest-priced Rhino post we fit.

  • Care most about looks? Brushed stainless (the RT/RD4 or RT/SS5) is the most discreet on most drives. Powder-coat lets you pick a colour.

  • Got a 4x4, large SUV or van? The RT/R8 is built for heavier vehicles and certified Sold Secure Gold. If you’d rather have stainless, the RT/SS5 at 710mm or 900mm gives you a taller post.

  • Insurer asking for a rating? Choose the RT/R8, which is on Sold Secure’s public listing at Gold. See which driveway bollards are insurance approved.

  • Find lifting hard? The RT/RD4 is the lightest, at 6kg. If that’s still too much, a lift-assist bollard takes most of the weight, or an automatic bollard does it all for you.

Most drives need one post in front of each car. Two Premium Stainless posts cost £1,549 fitted. For every price we charge, see our security bollard cost guide.

Buying a Rhino bollard fitted or supply only

We sell every Rhino post we fit either fitted or supply only, with free delivery on supply-only orders. A post is only as strong as its installation, so think carefully before fitting one yourself. Depending on the model, you’d need to dig 700mm to 1,000mm down, set the sleeve level in concrete, add drainage so rainwater can get out of the sleeve, and make good your drive.

Marshalls’ own guarantee on these posts is 12 months. When we fit yours, you also get our Gold Guarantee: if thieves break through your Wentworth bollard to take your car within 36 months, we refund your installation in full.

Is Rhino the best bollard brand?

Rhino posts are sold by many UK bollard retailers and installers, and there are good reasons. Three of Marshalls’ heavy-duty Rhino posts are on Sold Secure’s public listing at Gold. The RT/RD4 is light enough to lift every day. And there’s a size and finish for most drives, from a discreet 500mm stainless post to a 900mm one. That’s why our stainless, powder-coated and heavy-duty security posts are all Rhino.

It isn’t the only good choice, though. A Rhino telescopic post is still a manual post: you lift between 6kg and 18kg each time, depending on the model. If you want to raise the post from the car, an automatic bollard suits you better. When you compare brands, look at the independent rating, the lock, how deep the sleeve goes and who fits it, not just the name. Frequently Asked Questions

What are security bollards?

Security bollards are strong posts that stop a vehicle getting past. On a driveway, a telescopic security post locks upright in front of your car so it can’t be driven or towed off the drive, then drops flush into the ground when you need to get out. The Marshalls Rhino RT/RD4, RT/SS5 and RT/R8 are all this type.

What are the best driveway bollards in the UK?

For a manual post, we fit Marshalls Rhino. The stainless RT/RD4 suits most drives, and the RT/R8 is certified Sold Secure Gold for 4x4s, vans and high-value cars. Whatever the brand, look for an independent rating, a sleeve set deep in concrete with drainage, and a proper installation. If you’d rather not lift a post at all, an automatic bollard rises from the car.

What height do bollards need to be?

Rhino telescopic posts stand between 500mm and 900mm above ground. The 500mm RT/RD4 suits most cars. For a large SUV or van, a taller post such as the 670mm RT/R8 or the 710mm or 900mm RT/SS5 is easier to see. If the post will sit near a public road, or your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with your council first.

Are you allowed to put bollards outside your house?

On your own driveway, yes. You don’t usually need planning permission for a security post on private property, but check with your council if your home is listed or in a conservation area. You can’t put a bollard on the pavement, the road or a council verge without the council’s permission. More in our bollard regulations guide.

How much does it cost to install a security bollard?

Our Rhino posts cost £799 fitted for the powder-coated RT/RD4, £849 for the stainless RT/RD4 and £949 for the RT/R8 heavy-duty post. Every price includes VAT, digging, concrete, drainage and making good. Two Premium Stainless posts cost £1,549 fitted.

How do you install a security bollard?

The installer digs a hole, sets the post’s sleeve level in concrete with drainage so rainwater can get away, then makes good the surface around it. Rhino sleeves go between 700mm and 1,000mm into the ground, depending on the model. Our expert local installers check what’s underground before they dig, and take all the waste away.
